Different Studies Serve Different Purposes
Selecting the appropriate level of analysis is only part of the process. Different studies are designed to answer different questions and may be used at different stages of a facility’s lifecycle.
For example, HAZOP may be used to systematically identify process hazards and operability problems, while LOPA can help determine whether existing layers of protection provide sufficient risk reduction.
Where a broader understanding of risk is required, a Quantitative Risk Assessment may be appropriate.
Other specialist studies such as SIL Assessment, Bowtie Analysis, Fire Safety Studies and Hazard Identification (HAZID) can also contribute to understanding and managing particular risks.
Providers with expertise across multiple methodologies can select the most appropriate approach for the hazards, risks and decisions involved.

For example, Major Hazard Facilities are required to demonstrate that risks associated with Major Incidents are appropriately managed through the Safety Case process.
